PENSIONS AND SOCIAL SECURITY

INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY

‘International Social Security’ provides citizens residing abroad with social protection guaranteed to citizens who moved abroad according to international rules. In the Republic of Ireland, as in the 27 member States of the EU, social protection is governed by EU regulations on social security.

TAXES

Regarding taxes paid to the pension sector, Italy has entered into agreements with many Countries, including the Republic of Ireland, in order to avoid double taxation of retired persons. These agreements eliminate taxes on pensions in the Country that allocate them, so that retired persons can only be charged in their country of residence.

PAYMENT ABROAD OF THE INPS (ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL PREVIDENCE) PENSIONS

INPS pays the pensions of Italian citizens residing abroad through the bank who wins a tender competition held every three years. The bank appointed to provide this service operates through its affiliates in the other countries.

Pensions are paid monthly to Italian citizens residing abroad. Pensions inferior to the limitations established by the law are paid every six months in the same way as in Italy. Pensions are generally paid by direct debit to the bank account of the retired person.

The bank responsible for these payments must request proof that you are alive and that you, the retired person, live at your declared place of residence.

Pensions may be paid by direct debit to the bank account of the retired person if there is an agreement between INPS and the bank.

SELF-CERTIFICATION IN THE SOCIAL SECURITY FIELD

In accordance with law 127/97, Italian citizens residing abroad may significantly reduce the documentation required to obtain certain services by producing a self-certification.

Italian nationals residing abroad may send some statement equivalent or self-certificates attesting to personal states and facts to the national authorities (INPS, INAIL, Treasury, etc.).
