EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

In accordance with law-decree n. 408 of 24th June 1994, Italian candidates for the European Parliament can be elected by:

- Italian citizens residing in a member State of the EU and registered in AIRE;
- Italian citizens and their relatives living with them who are temporary residing in a member State of the EU to study or to work. In order to vote, they must submit their request to the Mayor of the Italian municipality of electoral registration, within the timeframe foreseen by the law.

In the Republic of Ireland, Italian citizens must vote in the polling stations established by this Embassy. The Italian Ministry of Interior sends an envelope with the ballot to voters, stating date, place and time to vote.

If voters do not receive the ballot at least the fifth day before the date to vote, they may contact this Embassy to verify their electoral position and to request the replacement certificate for the admission to vote.

If Italian voters, residing or temporary staying in the Republic of Ireland to study or to work, go back to Italy and have submitted the request to vote abroad within the timeframe foreseen by the law, they may vote at the municipality of electoral registration. In this case, voters must request to vote in Italy to the Mayor of the Italian municipality of electoral registration within the day before voting.

Italian voters residing in the Republic of Ireland can also opt to vote for candidates of their country of residence. In this case they will have to vote in the poll stations established by the local Authorities.

If Italian citizens vote for an Italian candidate, they are not allowed to vote also for a local candidate and viceversa.
