{"id":1028,"date":"2023-09-04T15:38:32","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T13:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambdublino.esteri.it\/?page_id=1028"},"modified":"2026-04-13T16:11:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T14:11:14","slug":"citizenship-by-filiation-descendance-iure-sanguinis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambdublino.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/citizenship-by-filiation-descendance-iure-sanguinis\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizenship by Descendance (\u201ciure sanguinis\u201d)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Citizenship by Descendance (\u201ciure sanguinis\u201d)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENDANCE \u201ciure sanguinis\u201d (Law n. 91\/1992)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The request for recognition of Italian citizenship is permitted upon application of the interested party,\u00a0<strong>of legal age<\/strong>, and can be submitted abroad exclusively at the Consular Office in the country of\u00a0<strong>legal residence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The following operational provisions are outlined.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>REQUIREMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> 3bis, paragraph 1, letter c, Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>One of the parents or grandparents (including adoptive) was born in Italy and held exclusively Italian citizenship (NB: this condition must exist at the date of the applicant\u2019s birth or at the death of the ancestor, if it occurred before);<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> 3bis, paragraph 1, letter d, Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>An Italian parent or adoptive parent has been resident in Italy for at least two continuous years prior to the birth or adoption of the child (residence must be proven through a historical residence certificate issued by the competent municipality);<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2013<\/p>\n<p><strong>NB For minors<\/strong>, refer, depending on the case, to the pages:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ambdublino.esteri.it\/en\/news\/dall_ambasciata\/2025\/07\/new-regulations-regarding-the-registration-of-births-of-minors-born-to-italian-parents\/\">CLICK HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2013<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROCEDURE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applicants who meet the above requirements may request an <strong>appointment exclusively by email.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 1<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease send the completed and signed form <a href=\"https:\/\/ambdublino.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Nuovo-Modello-di-richiesta-Cittadinanza-Italiana-i.s_.pdf\">(CLICK HERE)<\/a> to dublino.cittadinanza@esteri.it, together with a scanned copy of an identity document and of Irish residence permit (if non-EU).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 2<\/strong><br \/>\nOn the appointment day, interested parties must personally present the complete documentation,\u00a0<strong>in original and copy<\/strong>, depending on the requested type.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 3<\/strong><br \/>\nThis Embassy will analyse the application within the legal timeframe of 730 days (Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers No. 33 of 17\/01\/2014, published in G.U. No. 64 of 18\/03\/2014), communicating any requests for additional or corrected documentation if necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Documentation Case A \u2013 Refer to Art. 3bis, paragraph 1, letter c, Law No. 91\/1992<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of the applicant<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Valid passport and copy of the page with photo and signature;<\/li>\n<li>Proof of residence within this consular district;<\/li>\n<li>Long-stay residence permit;<\/li>\n<li>Birth certificate of the applicant issued by the country of birth, in original with apostille if non-EU, with Italian translation and apostille if non-EU;<\/li>\n<li>Marriage certificate (plus any divorce\/second marriage\/death of spouse), in original with apostille if non-EU, with Italian translation and apostille if non-EU.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Of the ancestor (grandparent and\/or parent)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Birth certificate, marriage certificate (plus any divorce\/second marriage\/death of spouse), in original with apostille if non-EU, with Italian translation and apostille if non-EU;<\/li>\n<li>Historical citizenship certificate of the ancestor from whom citizenship derives (grandparent and\/or parent);<\/li>\n<li>Non-naturalization certificate issued by the authorities of the country where they resided (valid for six months from issue), listing all variations of the name and surname as they appear in the civil status acts, even if corrected on individual certificates (for information regarding the request for this certificate, please visit the webpage of the correspondent Italian consular representations).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>NB: <\/strong>The office will verify that the applicant and their ascendants have <strong>not renounced Italian citizenship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: The template we are providing below,\u00a0<strong>exclusively for Ireland<\/strong>, is offered as a courtesy, and since it is issued by the local authorities, we are not responsible for any changes to it or for any modifications to the procedure required to obtain the certificate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ambdublino.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Questionnaire-Does-Not-hold-Irish-citizenship.pdf\"><strong>APPLICATION FORM<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>DOCUMENTATION Case B \u2013 Refer to Art. 3bis, paragraph 1, letter d, Law No. 91\/1992:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Of the applicant<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Valid passport and copy of the page with photo and signature;<\/li>\n<li>Proof of residence within this consular district;<\/li>\n<li>Long-stay residence permit;<\/li>\n<li>Birth certificate of the applicant issued by the country of birth, in original with apostille if non-EU, with Italian translation and apostille if non-EU;<\/li>\n<li>Marriage certificate (plus any divorce\/second marriage\/death of spouse), in original with apostille if non-EU, with Italian translation and apostille if non-EU.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Of the parent<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Historical citizenship certificate;<\/li>\n<li>Historical residence certificate (issued by the competent Italian municipality\/municipalities);<\/li>\n<li>Birth certificate, marriage certificate (plus any divorce\/second marriage\/death of spouse), in original with apostille if non-EU, with Italian translation and apostille if non-EU.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All Italian certificates must be requested from the competent municipality\/municipalities, recently issued, in original.<br \/>\nAll foreign acts, judgments, and certificates must be legalized by the Italian diplomatic\/consular representation in the country of issuance or bear the apostille affixed by the competent foreign authority in countries adhering to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 (refer to the following list, updated by the Italian Ministry of Interior\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prefettura.interno.gov.it\/sites\/default\/files\/16\/2024-06\/legalizzazione_supertabella.pdf\">legalizzazione_supertabella.pdf<\/a>).<br \/>\nAll mandatory Italian\u00a0<strong>translations<\/strong>\u00a0of the above acts must be legalized either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With the apostille as above;<\/li>\n<li>By the Italian diplomatic\/consular representation in the country of issuance<\/li>\n<li>Be sworn before an Italian Court if done in Italy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NB:<\/strong>\u00a0For\u00a0<strong>documents issued in Ireland<\/strong>, legalization or apostille is not required. It is possible to request birth and marriage certificates in multilingual format from local authorities.
