Both countries, Italy and Ireland, are members of the European Union, the Council of Europe and the OECD. Ireland does not participate in the Schengen area and in accordance with its policy of neutrality is not part of NATO.
The political collaboration between Italy and Ireland takes the form essentially within the European Union in the wake of a tradition of mutual solidarity.
In particular, there is a substantial coincidence of views and identity of interests on the most relevant dossiers on the European agenda: migrations; enlargement; security and strategic autonomy; relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
The frequent institutional visits and meetings between representatives of the political, cultural and business worlds demonstrate the good relations between the two countries, and the constant dialogue on a variety of topics.
