Today the Ambassador of Italy to Ireland, Nicola Faganello, and the Director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin, Michela Magrì, had the pleasure of visiting the Classical Museum of University College Dublin, where they met Head of School of Classics Dr. Jo Day, who masterfully highlighted the relevance of this precious collection, unique in Ireland in its display of Classical artefacts. The Classical Museum collection (apparently the only in Ireland, dedicated entirely to classical art) is also used by the School of Classics for third level teaching, by other schools in UCD, and other universities and has as its objectives to encourage research and publication and to act as an educational amenity for schools and the general public.
The visit was kindly organized by UCD Professor Lynda Mulvin from the School of Art History and Cultural Policy, with the aim of enhancing Ireland’s historical, cultural and artistic connections with the classical heritage, particularly in Italy, in the context of the twinning agreement signed at the beginning of the year between the cities of Pompeii and Dublin.
