Literary translation as a bridge between cultures and a tool for European dialogue was at the heart of the event Translating Joseph O’Connor, organized by the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation in cooperation with EUNIC Ireland to mark the European Day of Languages and International Translation Day.
The initiative brought together Irish writer Joseph O’Connor and three of his translators – Elisa Banfi for Italian, Carine Chichereau for French, and Malwina Stopyra for Polish – for a conversation moderated by Professor Michael Cronin, focusing on the role of the translator and the complex process through which literature transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries.
The event was supported by the Italian Cultural Institute in Dublin and the Embassy of Italy in Ireland, as well as by the Embassies of France and Poland and Alliance Française Dublin.
The Italian participation was particularly noteworthy, with the presence of the Ambassador of Italy to Ireland, H.E. Nicola Faganello, and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Dublin, Michela Linda Magrì.
Their presence reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to promoting cultural dialogue between Italy and Ireland and to highlighting translation as a means of fostering mutual understanding, contributing to the discussion on the circulation of works and ideas within the European cultural space.
Italy’s participation is part of a broader collaboration with EUNIC Ireland, a network of European cultural institutes and organizations based in Ireland, and highlights the role of culture and literature in strengthening exchanges among Europe’s various linguistic traditions.
