INSTRUCTIONS FOR REQUESTING THE TRANSCRIPTION OF CIVIL STATUS DOCUMENTS
ISSUED IN IRELAND
Italian citizens who are abroad, even temporarily, must notify the competent Italian Consulate of their civil status events (Birth, Marriage, Civil Union, Death) that occurred in foreign territory. For divorces, see separate section. It is then the duty of the diplomatic or consular authority to transmit these documents to the competent Italian municipality in order to transcribe them in the civil status registers (Decree of the President of the Republic 03/11/2000, no. 396, art. 17). The original document issued by the Irish Civil Registry Office, duly translated, must be sent to the persons concerned to:
- Municipality of A.I.R.E. registration for Italian nationals residing in Ireland or regularly registered with another consular district
- Italian Commune of residence for compatriots residing in Italy
- Directly to the Italian Commune of residence, with certified translation.
NB For the translation of the original Certificate into Italian, the respective Guided Translation is available on the website, to be completed by correctly reporting in Italian all the data in English present in the Certificate.
Request for transcription of an Irish Birth Certificate.
NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION:
- MODULO DUB-SC/2
- Copies of the parents’ identification documents: passport or Identity Card (front and back)
- Original birth certificate issued by the Irish Civil Registry Office
- Translation (Traduzione)of the original certificate into Italian (by the applicant)
Request for transcription in Italy of an Irish Marriage/Civil Union Certificate.
NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION:
- Partnership Certificate: MODULO DUB-SC/1
- Copies of the identification documents of the spouses: passport or Identity Card (front and back)
- Original marriage/civil partnership certificate issued by the Irish Civil Registry OfficE
- Translation (Traduzione)of the original certificate into Italian (by the applicant)
Request for transcription in Italy of an Irish Death Certificate
NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION:
- MODULO DUB-SC/3
- Copies of an identification document (passport/ID card) of the applicant
- Copies of an identification document (passport/ID card) of the deceased
- Original death certificate issued by the Irish Civil Registry Office
- Translation (Traduzione)of the original certificate into Italian (by the applicant)

NON ISSUED IN IRELAND
In order for the foreign civil status act (Birth, Marriage, Civil Union, Death) to be valid in Italy as well, it must be transcribed at the competent Italian Municipality, through the competent consular office. For divorces, see separate section. The consular offices to be contacted are to be identified on the basis of the place of issue of the foreign document to be transcribed; in the event that Italian citizens registered with A.I.R.E. with residence in Ireland contact this Embassy for the transcription of a non-Irish foreign document, must be in possession of all the documentation required in the specific case and:
It is IMPORTANT to indicate in the form the reasons for submitting the request for registration of the Civil Status Act at the Italian Embassy in Dublin instead of at the Italian Consular Office competent according to the country of issue of the Act.
MANDATORY DOCUMENTATION TO BE SUBMITTED
(INCOMPLETE REQUESTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED)
- Correctly completed and signed DUB-SC/4 application form
- Deed issued by the foreign authorities in FULL and ORIGINAL version, legalized with Apostille (Hague Convention of 5 October 1961) or legalized by the local Italian Consular Representation;
- Legalized translation into Italian of all foreign documentation.
Important Translations from any foreign language into Italian made in other countries must be legalized with an apostille in the country where the certificate was issued, if required by local laws, or at the Italian Consular Office in the issuing State. Those executed in Italy must be sworn by the sworn translator at any Court, with payment of the relevant stamp duty
- Copies of the identification documents of the interested parties (including the parents in the case of a birth certificate): passport or Identity Card (front/back).
