F.A.Q. – Frequently Asked Questions

AIRE

Is it mandatory to register with AIRE?

Citizens who transfer their residence abroad for periods longer than 12 months must register with A.I.R.E.

How soon do I have to register with AIRE?

It is necessary to register within 90 days of moving abroad. Registration can also be made later, but cannot be retroactive

How do I know if I have been registered in the consular register?

Please indicate your email address on the AIRE Online registration request form. Once entered in the consular file, you will receive a confirmation message that your registration has been sent to your Municipality of last residence in Italy or of reference in Italy.

How do I know if you have received my AIRE registration request?

If the AIRE registration request has been correctly made online, at the end of the procedure you will see an automatic thank you message, showing an identification number. If you have not seen it, it is advisable to start over, making sure that the uploaded files do not exceed the indicated size.

How do I know if what I sent is correct?

Due to the high volume of requests received by this office it will not be possible to confirm the correctness of individual requests before they are processed, so please ensure you have sent all the required documents.

What happens if I don’t update my overseas address?

Failure to update the address makes it impossible to contact the citizen and to receive the postcard or electoral packet in the event of voting and could lead to cancellation from AIRE due to unavailability.

CIVIL  STATUS

Can I ask the Consulate to issue my birth certificate?

No. The Consulate is not competent. The extracts of the civil status documents (birth, marriage and death) must be requested directly by the interested party from the competent Italian Municipality, in which the document was drawn up or transcribed.

How do I get a residence certificate?

The consular offices do not hold the functions of registry officer and therefore they cannot issue certificates of residence, a task that can only be performed by Italian municipalities both with regard to the AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero) and with regard to the APR (Resident Population Registry).

The certificate can therefore be requested from the last municipality of residence in Italy in which the compatriot is registered with the AIRE.

We inform you that the law n. 183 of 12 November 2011 in article 15  allows for complete decertification in relations between the Public Administration and private individuals. Therefore, from January 1, 2012 the certifications issued by the Public Administrations (therefore also by this Consulate) are valid and usable only in the relationship between private individuals. In relations with Public Administration bodies and public service managers, the certificates (therefore also that of residence) are always replaced by substitutive declarations (self-certifications) or by the deed of notoriety.

Public Administrations will no longer be able to request or accept certificates.

In the event that a private individual requests the issue of a certificate to be delivered to another private resident abroad or to an Administration of a country other than Italy, this certificate must also be requested from the Municipality at whose AIRE the compatriot appears to be registered, and is valid only for abroad.

Please note that self-certifications are NOT accepted as proof of residence for the application for registration in Aire (DL 223/2012).

It is advisable to scan the documents in PDF format: this format allows multiple documents to be inserted in the same file. Please note that each file created must not exceed the maximum weight of 1 Mega (it is advisable to check the size of the files and reduce the resolution of the same)

The “Submit application” button is not active. How to do?

Make sure you have uploaded a minimum of three files.

I am already registered with AIRE, but the program only allows me to register and not to change my address. How to do?

We suggest you verify that you have created the Fast It account by entering your name and surname exactly as indicated on your identity document (do not use accented letters but only the apostrophe). Furthermore, for those who had registered before the advent of Fast it, before being able to communicate the change of address it is necessary to request access to their consular card by sending only an identity document and wait for the request to be validated.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

I have a child under 14 who must travel unaccompanied by their parents: what should I do?

An accompanying declaration must be submitted to the Consulate. Parents can request that the names of the companions, the duration of the trip and the destination be printed on the minor’s passport or, alternatively, that these data be included in a separate certificate that will be printed and issued by the consular office. In the event that the minor is entrusted to an institution or a transport company, only the certificate will be issued. Information and form of declaration_of_accompanying_for_minors

What to do in case of theft or loss of an identity document?
